That’s kind of how I saw it too. The only experience Kyri has with “big flying things” is a dragon, so she would classify the helicopter as some sort of dragon even if it doesn’t quite look like one.
Flying machine is within her experience. And same for the others present. No need to identify it more precisely to know it can’t be handled the way dragons were.
That said, it does provide a bit of comedy within the tragedy. 🙂
I was literally just typing something very similar when my email told me I was beaten to the punch.
Although Jon would certainly be able to identify the threat, the rest of the gang would have only enough knowledge to identify that this flying menace looks nothing like a dragon. To be fair, this whole scene happens in a matter of seconds and they’re probably doing a simple once-over as they react and plan.
And keeping going my gag from the previous page:
Rogue: “Anyone bother to prepare Protection from Arrows?”
Mage: “Nope.”
Cleric: “No.”
Rogue: “Wonderful.”
*party gets filled with lead*
*DM laughs evilly*
DK – Hmmm…. I don’t seem to recall Kryi or the others having any experience with flying machines. Jon yes. Of course you sometimes remember the story better than me. 😉
I was not referring to modern machines. Medieval human education does include the concept of machines, not necessarily automated of course.
So even if they don’t know what it truely is, they can recognize it’s a machine, not a live being. 😉
Jon’s a different story. Which makes me wonder, maybe Cole knows that technology as well. By the way, where are those 2 right now ? 🙂
You said flying machines before and there clearly weren’t any. There is also no evidence of machinery beyond a supposition that this world has the same history as our world and I don’t recall over stones that turn people into dragons in our history. On top of all that the entire story’s character development of Kyra is that she is less sophisticated than others more prone to action than study. She had about a half second to identify it before she spoke and bolted.
He’ll I know people today that would call that a fly thingy and a dragon if they were drunk.
“The year 1994. From out of space comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction. Man’s civilization is cast in ruins.
“Two thousand years later, Earth is reborn. A strange new world arises from the old: a world of savagery, super-science, and sorcery.
“But one man bursts his bonds to fight for justice! With his companions Ookla the Mok and Princess Ariel, he pits his strength, his courage, and his fabulous Sun Sword against the forces of evil. He is Thundarr, the Barbarian!”
Dragon, right… about that…
Yes. A dragon that looks EXACTLY NOTHING like a dragon. Whelp, I’m out. *Rides bicycle with square tires up a glowing rainbow into the ketchup clouds*
Also, because I can: “That Sniper’s a Spy!”
End of Line
The rockers of the dragonstone don’t count, but a machine does?
Odd, that.
So she is supposed to identify it as a Hughs/MD MH-6? What else in her experience is she supposed to identify it as?

And yes it is an MH-6 Little Bird. 🙂

Remind me not to play in that campaign. ;P

I would agree with you if Kyri’s statement was not backed up by Herrick’s talking about a kill. 😉
Seconded.
Also, “a supposition that this world has the same history as our world” ==>> It does. Just add in a few thousand years in between.

@Lunaroki : it does sound a lot like Kamandi at Earth’s end… :p
Watch out gang! This dragon breathes bullets!
More on that later. 🙂
