I think he blames HIMSELF for all this happenstance, so he wishes himself away into Simon’s world! Look at the second panel here. It’s partially him vanishing as well as the explosion (I think)! I know it says he is looking forward to the future, but maybe he doesn’t mind a future of being in Simon’s world, and he’s happy because he knows his family will be safe- from him, too.
