Replacing people with their alternate reality counterparts, eh ?
Either it’s an override which means they’ll have to forcefolly remember their past to overcome this predicament and turn the tide, OR it’s a place switch meaning our heroes will be in the alternate reality now, looking for a way out.
Probably more along the lines of “sudo mv /alt/person1 /universe/person1”
The old “Keep old file or overwrite” annoyance for those of you who don’t command line – only without the “keep old file or” bit. Shells are quite unforgiving.
Oh, there’s also my personal favorite – “sudo rm -r /” <- do NOT try that.
Unix indeed. Forget the “sudo” part, it’s just for a normal user to get temporarilly root access levels : being authorized to do anything.
mv : move. Works same way as DOS.
rm : del. The -r option allows the command to delete directories, and on unix there’s only one root directory : /, where on dos and windows there’s one for each disk letter : \.
That said, DarthNSupreme could have added the -f option to force the delete (otherwise, can be refused) and send the output to the void so it shows nothing.
“sudo rm -rf / > /dev/nul” ==> now, you killed your computer yourself, you can format and reinstall everything…

I think, the term rotgut is intented. It’s used for very very very bad quality alcoholic beverage. Like Jim Beam or authentic russian self destilled vodka, or worse.
