I just drew the clock once and duplicated it for each panel so they show identical times. I stretched the perspective to fit Simon so that’s probably why it isn’t working for you. Hmmmm… how to fix that?
It’s more the fact that the clock is rotated rather than stretched. Without numbers, the darkening of the cardinal points doesn’t seem to stand out enough to make the rotation of the clock clear. Perhaps if you lengthen the cardinal point markers so they stand out more it might make the rotation of the clock more apparent?
Keeping time stopped for long period is not so smart unless you already know where to go. Looks like Simon never took the time to read DragonBall, he’d know Guldo nearly got defeated precisely because of that flaw.
Then again, Cole was able to shave a beard while stopping time…
Wait. Is it me, or si the spire itself still affected by the flow of time ? Certainly looks that way since it’s still in color while the heroes are not. Probably means that Cole and Ben, if they were far enough, are not affected by Simon’s time stop either, and can save the hero party.
I’m guessing, as it’s already been stated that the Spire is the source of power for the over-stones, that it isn’t affected by them, or not in the same way as everything else.
Yes. Since the Spire is the ultimate source of the Banestone’s power, I chose not to make it black and white. Also, it’s known as the “Eternity Spire” so that has something to do with “time” also.
Every time a Banestone rocker stopped time all they did was having minor effects. Like cole dressing/underssing herik/shaving a king.
If it would allow you to stop time and act at full power against the world while doing so, it would have been a totally different powerlevel then what it was used for so far.
Great point. We’ve only seen Cole stop time with the Banestone so far, and yes she is inexperienced and a bit mischievous. However in Issue 8, while time was suspended, Cole tried to blast through Pablo’s light field. In this case she ran out of power before she had an effect.
And while he rocked the Banestone, Jon was known as Time Killer. I’m sure there’s a reason behind that nickname.
Ah yes, Tony, i do remember Cole trying to break through Pablo’s light shield. Not very clever though, since she mearly smashed it wusing brute strength, hoping the stopped time would have prevented Pablo from strengthenning his shield between 2 blows (which he never needed anyway).
True, Jon’s past nickname is an unusual one for a stoner, usually they simply get their main overstone as a nickname. Still, you have yet to tell us more about Jon’s tactics with the Banestone, all we’ve seen so far from him was modern knowledge and understanding, the rest coming from his other stones.
Well, the Banestone rocker can still move and breathe with time “stopped,” right? Both of these tasks should be impossible if everything is truly standing still around them. We saw back here: http://endstone.net/comic/8-16/ in chapter 8 that light is stopped as well, which should make sight impossible too.
Naturally, if basic physics like light and air can be completely ignored by the Banestone rocker when stopping time, it stands to reason that they can affect and harm people as well.
Ah, Sci-Fi/Fantasy physics. So much more fun than real physics. Unless they are being used against you, that is.
The way I see it, the time stop ability is selective, in other words there’s a bubble of space surrounding the Banesone user’s body that is constantly immune to the time stop, and he probably can allow other people to remain immune to it as well. So, around Simon, air is flowing, which is how he can still breathe.
Sight is harder to explain, but i guess while the ability is active, the Banestone rocker can see energy lines rather than actual light. That way, he’s not detecting the light coming to his eyes, but rather the energies still away from him.
Another explanation possible would need dimensionnal travel, but would explain both in one shot : when a Banestone rocker stops time, he does not actually stops it but rather transports himself in a parallel world with its own time flow. For physicians, time is as much a dimension as the 3 space ones, so here we can think of this parallel world as having its own 4 dimension (3+1). From there, the rocker can still affect our 3 space dimensions, including breathing our air and affecting our world, while his sight relies on the light of the parallel world, which would emit from our light.
Man i love theorizing about Sci-Fi and fantasy mecanics and pseudo-science. %)
Personally, I’ve always thought of time as occupying multiple dimensions on its own, not merely a single linear one. Admittedly, this is partially as an excuse to use within a sci-fi series I’ve been working on for the past few years with which to wave away causality and “lesser” paradoxes without having to hire a wizard. Magic is expensive.
That other dimension explanation actually makes quite a bit of sense; simply create (or make use of) an adjacent dimensional plane where physics operate slightly differently from the “origin” plane. Bah, this is what I get for watching a 27 hour Doctor Who marathon of the classic series while brainstorming sci-fi ideas. Still, time well spent.
As I see it for the sight problem, well, the light is still there when time is stopped, isn’t it? Just not moving. Since everything else is frozen as well, the light reflects what was there when time was stopped. Admittedly, if everything else was still moving, that’d be a problem, but it’s not.
Maybe I just can’t comprehend the depths of this. I’m still in school. 😛
Eh, I don’t pretend to comprehend how it works either, but even with my limited knowledge of physics I know that moving at or beyond the speed of light (basically the same as stopping time) should either crush the unfortunate fool or create an atomic fireball due to the speed differential. With light stopped as well sight would be impossible, as the light containing the visual information is not traveling into the inner eye to be decoded into brainwaves and so on so forth.
Oh, look, somebody who actually knows this stuff: http://what-if.xkcd.com/1/ There. That’s what would happen if physics applied to the banestone rocker whilst time was stopped.
So basically, either 1) some multidimensional thing is in play, 2) the “laws” of physics are wrong somehow, or 3) WIZARDS!!1
Or…you could get *really* freaky and introduce relativistic effects. A meson has a lifespan of 8/10 of a second yet it can make it across the universe because it moves at near light speed when produced by a super nova.
It looks like the clock says 3:20 in the first panel, and 2:15 in the others. Mistake, or some implication of stopping time?
BTW, this comic is awesome. Been reading for years. Thanks!
Howdy. 🙂 Nice to hear from a long time reader.

Good idea. I probably should have used a numbered clock but hash marks were easier to draw. I’ll add it to the list.

Of course, Simon doesn’t have to hold his breath…

Thanks for stoppin’ by. 🙂 It’s difficult creating this comic week in and week out so it’s good to know folks are enjoying it. 🙂
Are we sure he can affect them at full power now?

I’ll say #3 for now. 😛 Thank you for showing me that baseball awesomeness and why my foolish ideas don’t work. xD
Or…you could get *really* freaky and introduce relativistic effects. A meson has a lifespan of 8/10 of a second yet it can make it across the universe because it moves at near light speed when produced by a super nova.
Withdrawals in (unpausable time) 3… 2…
You’re probably right, though that would be disapointing for some reason. I’ll stick to the unaffected Cole/Ben duo coming to the rescue for now. :p
Wait, are Jon and ‘The Baby’ playing Rock-Paper-Scissors?
They are indeed. 🙂
They have nothing better to do? 😛
I see you don’t want to give anything away with the incentive… come on… :I
I wanna see spoilery stuff! xD
