He is Commissar Ciaphas Cain, HERO OF THE IMPERIUM (the all-caps is obligatory :P), or, well, that’s what people /think/. In reality, he is pretty inept and seems to survive and win against foes that should have easily destroyed him time after time, and he keeps climbing the ladders despite not wanting to (however, as the series his written as if it were his memoirs, there might be a part of self-loathing involved).
